CANBERRA, Sept 13, 2007 (Xinhua via COMTEX) -- Australian Foreign Minister Alexander Downer on Thursday announced that Australia will boost its support of flood victims in the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) with a further 2 million Australian dollars (1.67 million U.S. dollars) of emergency relief.

The latest assistance is in addition to 2 million dollars in food aid announced in last August.

It also follows recent U.N. and International Federation of the Red Cross appeals for international assistance.

"UNICEF (United Nations Children's Fund) will provide nutritional support, school materials, and water supply and sanitation at cost of 750,000 Australian dollars (627,000 U.S. dollars)," Downer said in a statement.

"An additional 750,000 dollars will be provided through the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies for emergency services and non-food items such as health care, water and sanitation, shelter and essential household items, and training in disaster mitigation and management," he said.

Australia will also support the World Health Organization (WHO) to provide essential medicines and other health needs to the value of 500,000 dollars (418,000 U.S. dollars).

Downer said Australia will continue to monitor humanitarian needs in DPRK.
